A Letter from Nicole Handfield, Retreat Coordinator

Charlotte Mason wrote: “‘Thou hast set my feet in a large room’ [Psalm 31:8]; should be the glad cry of every intelligent soul. Life should be all living, and not merely a tedious passing of time; not all doing or all feeling or all thinking––the strain would be too great––but, all living; that is to say, we should be in touch wherever we go, whatever we hear, whatever we see, with some manner of vital interest. . . . The question is not,––how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education––but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?

We invite all mothers, fathers, and teens to join us for the In a Large Room Retreat. All are welcome. Educators new to her methods will find a gentle yet rich introduction to Charlotte Mason, while veterans well-steeped in her methods will deepen their understanding and connect with others.  All will come away encouraged, inspired, and refreshed.

I wrote the above for the very first IaLRR in 2015. I moved a few small things today, but it’s the exact same vision for the 2019 retreat. I don’t know about you, but I really need this! To step back and invite God to lead us where He wants us to go. To intentionally make a space of calm and quiet, away from the busyness of life, to really hear from Him. To hold hands in sweet fellowship with my Charlotte Mason friends.

Originally, this retreat was supposed to be an entire weekend away. Due to low registration, we cancelled the original speakers and accommodations. But, if it is at all possible, I encourage you to seek child care for both Friday and Saturday and try to retreat for the whole weekend. You can attend the Friday sessions at Pearlstone (which includes a fabulous nourishing lunch), spend some time Saturday morning (alone or with a group) digesting Friday’s messages, visiting a museum with your Book of Centuries, or walking through God’s Out-of-Doors with your Nature Notebook. At 2pm on Saturday, come to the Book Hospital at my home with a couple of books that need repair. I’ll show you how to repair and protect those vessels of living ideas. If all your books are healthy and happy, you are welcome to join in a casual Notebook Tea. At 3:30, bring a friend to Art Middlekauff’s CM101 talk or take a walk to the nearby pond with your Nature Notebook. Around 6:00 we will all enjoy wood-fired pizza dinner. After dinner, Kent (our resident pizziolo) will share a presentation on how to build your own wood-fired oven. Families are welcome. I hope to see you there!

The question is not, - how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education – but how much does he care? And about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? And, therefore,
how full is the life he has before him?

-Charlotte Mason
